Amitabha is a celestial Buddha and is recognized in both the Mahayana and Vajrayana sects of Buddhism. In the Vajrayana sect, Amtiabha is known for his longevity and is sometimes called "The Buddha of Infinite Light". He is also considered to be the Buddha of comprehensive love and works for the enlightenment of all others.
This mantra calls forth the energy of Amitabha and the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. One translation of this song is: "I prostrate (or pay homage) to Amitabha, and to the embodiment of the three jewlels of Buddhism: Buddha, Dharma (the Buddhist teachings or 8 fold path) and Sangha (the 'supreme assembly' or spiritual community).
The way that I work with this mantra is to call on my inner and infinite light, celebrating Self, all the teachings that lead us to truth on our path, and the communities both large and small. One of the most beautiful commentaries I have come across on the definition of "sangha" is by my teacher Adyashanti who says, "We are birthed into sangha, into sacred community. It is called the world."
